Circling the Seasons

In Zero Balancing, one of the forms of bodywork that I practice, we look at things in terms of structure and energy (flow) and the relationship between the two. We need differing ratios of structure and energy at different times. For example, structure in clothing gives form to someone’s frame, but too much structure (such as a corset) can feel uncomfortable and make it hard to breathe. On the other hand, too much flow by way of slouchy clothes can look too casual and feel sluggish.

This concept also works when we look at health and habits. We need different things at different times. Too much structure with food can tick the boxes nutritionally but leave us feeling bored. Too much flow can lead to late nights, excess eating and not enough movement.

I think this lens of structure and energy serves as well as we move through the seasons. Modern comforts mean that can we create artificial environments with lighting, heating, access to non-seasonal foods and less need to move our whole bodies. Towards the winter, nature requires that we sleep more and conserve our energy. This is easier said than done, particularly considering that so many festivities occur at this time of the year. In another blog post, I’ll give some specific things we can consider with structure and energy in the Winter.

Circling the Seasons is a workshop that will run every 3 months to mark the changing seasons (namely the Winter and Summer Solstice and Spring and Autumn Equinox).
